Inflammation in Glaucoma: From the back to the front of the eye, and beyond.
Our approach was to explain how para-inflammation is necessary to maintain homoeostasis, and to describe abnormal inflammatory findings observed in glaucomatous patients or in animal glaucoma models, supporting the hypothesis of a dysregulation of the inflammatory balance toward a pro-inflammatory phenotype.
Phase 3, Randomized, 20-Month Study of Bimatoprost Implant in Open-Angle Glaucoma and Ocular Hypertension (ARTEMIS 1).
Both dose strengths of bimatoprost implant met the primary end point of noninferiority to timolol through week 12.
When Is a Control Not a Control? Reactive Microglia Occur Throughout the Control Contralateral Pathway of Retinal Ganglion Cell Projections in Experimental Glaucoma.
These data suggest that caution is warranted when using the contralateral eye as a control and in comparing visual thalami in unilateral models of glaucoma.
Prevalence of Charles Bonnet syndrome in patients with glaucoma: a systematic review with meta-analyses.
However, limitations of the current literature should be highlighted and careful approach towards conclusions is important. More studies are needed to better understand the prevalence and risk factors among different populations of patients with glaucoma.
Association between Glucagon-like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonists and the Risk of Glaucoma in Individuals with Type 2 Diabetes.
Exposure to GLP-1RA was associated with a lower risk of developing glaucoma compared with receiving other second-line antihyperglycemic medication. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE(S): Proprietary or commercial disclosure may be found after the references.
A Scoping Review of Quality of Life Questionnaires in Glaucoma Patients.
Wide variability among questionnaires used to determine vision related QoL in glaucoma and in the responses elicited was identified.
Potential metabolic markers in glaucoma and their regulation in response to hypoxia.
Reduced serum levels of lactate and total amino acids were identified as potential markers for NTG.
The physical properties of generic latanoprost ophthalmic solutions are not identical.
Generic latanoprost eye drops should not be considered identical to the original brand version as regards to drop size, volumes, pH values, buffer capacity, viscosity, hardness of bottles and costs.
Conjunctival Goblet Cells, the Overlooked Cells in Glaucoma Treatment.
We conclude that prostaglandin analogs spare the conjunctival GCs more compared with other antiglaucomatous drops and that GCs may be a good predictor of surgical outcome after filtration surgery.
What Do We Really Know about the Effectiveness of Glaucoma Interventions?: An Overview of Systematic Reviews.
Most systematic reviews evaluating interventions for glaucoma are of poor reliability.
Generic benzalkonium chloride-preserved travoprost eye drops are not identical to the branded polyquarternium-1-preserved travoprost eye drop: Effect on cultured human conjunctival goblet cells and their physicochemical properties.
BAK travoprost caused GC loss, indicating that PQ preservation may be preferable in treatment of glaucoma. Furthermore, physicochemical properties of branded and generic travoprost eye drops can not be assumed to be identical.
Melanopsin-mediated pupillary light reflex and sleep quality in patients with normal tension glaucoma.
Patients with NTG exhibited reduced ipRGC activity compared to healthy subjects, while no differences were observed in sleep quality.
Comparative efficacy and safety of preserved versus preservative-free beta-blockers in patients with glaucoma or ocular hypertension: a systematic review.
Although some measures of ocular surface health favoured preservative-free medications, more evidence is needed.
Phase 3, Randomized, Comparison Study of Intracameral Bimatoprost Implant 10 µg and Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty.
The bimatoprost implant demonstrated statistical and clinical noninferiority to SLT in IOP reduction from baseline at weeks 4, 12, and 24.
Adverse Effects and Safety in Glaucoma Patients: Agreement on Clinical Trial Outcomes for Reports on Eye Drops (ASGARD)-A Delphi Consensus Statement.
We propose a consensus-based series of outcomes and assessment methods to be used in clinical trials assessing adverse effects of antiglaucomatous eye drops.
Topical glaucoma medications - Possible implications on the meibomian glands.
This negatively impacts quality of life, adherence to treatment regimens and prognosis. In this review, we explore the available evidence regarding the effects of IOP-lowering eye drops on the meibomian glands.
Evaluation of Generic versus Original Prostaglandin Analogues in the Treatment of Glaucoma: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.
Trials comparing original and generic PGAs did not show a clinically significant difference in IOP-lowering effect or tolerability.
Persistence and adherence with Latanoprost: A Danish register-based cohort study in older patients with glaucoma.
This study found increased adherence and persistence in latanoprost users among those who redeemed preservative-free latanoprost (Monoprost®) and among those who switched between different latanoprost formulations.
Bidirectional 5-year risks of diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and/or ocular hypertension: Results from a national screening programme.
In a national cohort, diabetes associated with a little higher risk of upcoming glaucoma and/or OHT, and, inversely, the presence of the latter predicted a higher risk of incident DR.
Optic disc drusen in patients diagnosed with normal tension glaucoma.
The prevalence of ODD in patients diagnosed with NTG is substantially higher than in the background population.
Longitudinal associations of retinal vessel morphology with intraocular pressure and blood pressure at follow-up visit-Findings from a Danish eye and vision cohort, Project FOREVER.
In a Danish eye and vision cohort, variations in BP and alterations in IOP over time were associated with changes in the width and tortuosity of retinal vessels.
Detection of visual field defects by opticians - with Damato Multifixation Campimetry Online.
Screening with DMCO demonstrated high specificity, whereas sensitivity was unsatisfactory. Future studies with enough power to estimate the true sensitivity is needed.
The Multifaceted Nongenetic Risk Factors for Primary Open-angle Glaucoma: An Overview of Systematic Reviews.
This article summarizes the current knowledge on risk factors for POAG from published SRs.
Semaglutide Protects Retinal Ganglion Cells Against Rotenone-Induced Degeneration via Improved Glucose Metabolism.
SEM may help preserve retinal ganglion cells under conditions of mitochondrial Complex I inhibition, suggesting a potential therapeutic role in glaucoma management; however, further studies are required to confirm metabolic changes observed in this study.
Patient preferences for adverse effects of intraocular pressure-lowering eye drops. Results from a Danish large-scale discrete choice experiment: These adverse effects matter to the patients.
This study provides novel insight into patients' preferences for AEs of IOP-lowering eye drops by identifying the characteristics that most strongly influence treatment choices.
Referral for glaucoma surgery and types of surgery in different European regions in 2025, the EURACCUR study.
European glaucoma care shows marked regional differences in surgical practices and referral timeliness. Frequent late referrals are associated with advanced disease, highlighting a need for improved early intervention to prevent vision loss.
