Macrophage-Hosted Porphyromonas gingivalis Is a Risk Factor for Cataract Development.

Chronic infection with PG can access the lens epithelium via macrophages during stress conditions, which promotes cataract development by possibly elevating oxidative stress, apoptosis, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition in lens tissues.
